Chely Wright Comes Out

Country singer Chely Wright's reasoning was sound. "There had never, ever been a country music artist who had acknowledged his or her homosexuality," she tells PEOPLE. "I wasn't going to be the first."

But now Wright is changing her tune. "Nothing in my life has been more magical than the moment I decided to come out," she says.

Wright, 39, recalls of her youth in the South: "I don't have a memory in my life that doesn't include the dream of making music." But during her childhood and rapid ascent to fame in the county world, she also experienced a community in which homosexuality was shunned. "I hid everything for my music," says Wright.

The singer-songwriter, who has won both an Academy of Country Music and a Country Music award, will later this week release her memoir, Like Me, as well as her first album in five years, Lifted off the Ground.

She'll also appear on the Today Show Wednesday to discuss her personal journey.

I'm sorry, but who cares? Maybe its just that not being into country music I have no idea who this person is. I'm glad she is able to acknowledge who she is, but I dont find this to be a game changing announcement that deserved all the pre-publicity.

I see she has a CD coming out too? I wonder which is more important to her.

Rog- Did you really expect Keith Urban to be the guy? Country music is filled with homophobes. It's filled with right wing republicans. I say Congrats to Chely! Don't be a jerk just because you don't know who she is. ALOT of people ( the ones who need to be more openminded) know who she is.

At least she's not prancing around with a fake boyfriend like all the gay/bi actors are doing in Hollywood. At least she had the nerve to come out unlike GB and the rest of those closet cases.

"Personal Journey"????? Really. Sometimes I feel like we are stuck in the 1970's. I dont know anyone who's gayness was a journey or that "coming out" was any big deal. Most of us were "out" in high school. Today we have that girl fighting to go to prom and it just insults her and me and most of my gay friends when a cebrity decides to be honest years after anyone really cares.

I have no idea who she is. I've never heard of her before now. I'm no country music fan. So much for all the hype. Regardless, it's good she came out, especially since she's involved in the country music world. Now if Dolly or Winona would come out already, that would be news worthy. At least I've heard of them!
Cheers!

Never heard of her but good for her.

I have to admit I'm disappointed that it wasn't Queen Latifah or another big name, but I congratulate her, which is still hard today, especially in the country music industry, which won't be as quick to embrace her, if at all. I also agree with the above poster who said at least she isn't bearding up like a lot of actors. What she's doing takes guts. Something Hollywood hasn't yet discovered.

It's nice of her, but who cares? I live in NYC and have never heard of her. Maybe to the mid-west and country music lovers this is a big deal. But good for her on being honest. Again another celebrity who has already been famous and made money comes out. They don't have to worry about not being discovered, they already made it. Never thought that someone relevant would come out and one probably never will.
