Oscar Night

It's the night in Hollywood that every single actor or actress has always hoped to one day attend.  Since it is only 5 days away the women are making the final dress selections, and the guys are going over a list of possible beards/dates.  Me, I'm excited to see Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin tear the stage up.  Wonder if I will get to host it one day?  Live, from the Oscars, it's....well never mind.

I am a betting kind of guy, in case you haven't figured out, and Oscar winners are the hot bet this week.  So I have compiled a list of the nominees and who I think should win.  In the comments, leave your guesses and you never know, you might get a cut.

yeah, probably not.....

Best Picture

'Avatar'
'The Blind Side'
Everyone has their money on Avatar, but am I the only one that thinks this movie should win?  It was a real movie and I feel as if this could finally be Sandy Bullock's year.
'District 9'
'An Education'
'The Hurt Locker'
'Inglourious Basterds'
'Precious'
'A Serious Man'
'Up'
'Up in the Air'

Best Director

James Cameron, 'Avatar'
Kathryn Bigelow, 'The Hurt Locker'
Quentin Tarantino, 'Inglourious Basterds'
Lee Daniels, 'Precious'
If you haven't seen this movie, go now.  I mean it, don't even finish reading this.  Come back when you're done, until you do, you cannot fully give your opinion about this category.
Jason Reitman, 'Up in the Air'

Best Actor

Jeff Bridges, 'Crazy Heart'
George Clooney, 'Up in the Air'
Simply because after years of amazing roles, this movie surpasses them all.  He deserves an Oscar, maybe then he can stop working so damn hard.
Colin Firth, 'A Single Man'
Morgan Freeman, 'Invictus'
Jeremy Renner, 'The Hurt Locker'

Best Actress

Sandra Bullock, 'The Blind Side'
Helen Mirren, 'The Last Station'
Carey Mulligan, 'An Education'
Gabourey Sidibe, 'Precious'
Meryl Streep, 'Julie & Julia'
This is the category I cannot seem to make a choice on.  As I said before, Sandy Bullock has the underdog vote, but then Gabourey Sidibe is the one everyone is pulling for.  Both delivered amazing performances and if Sidibe did win, it would make for a great Oscar story.  But then you have Streep, who has a permanent seat in this category.  And she was unsurprisingly amazing in "Julie & Julia."  But I think I am going to put my money on Sandy.  No offense to Sidibe, but Sandy has worked years for this and she is owed it.

Best Supporting Actor

Matt Damon, 'Invictus'
Woody Harrelson, 'The Messenger'
Christopher Plummer, 'The Last Station'
Stanley Tucci, 'The Lovely Bones
Stanly Tucci has been a staple in this town for years and throws himself into every role.  He is certainly the top choice for me in this category.
Christoph Waltz, 'Inglourious Basterds'

 Best Supporting Actress
Penelope Cruz, 'Nine'
Vera Farmiga, 'Up in the Air'
Maggie Gyllenhaal, 'Crazy Heart'
Anna Kendrick, 'Up in the Air'
Mo'nique, 'Precious'

Yet another category that has me torn.  Vera is an honest actress, a thrill to work with.  Mo'Nique blew everyone away with her gritty performance in Precious.  She has my main vote, but Maggie Gyllenhaal is also a favorite of mine.  I think Mo'Nique will grab but, but pulling for Mags.

Best Animated Feature Film
'Coraline'
No question about it....
'Fantastic Mr. Fox'
'The Princess and the Frog'
'The Secret of Kells'
'Up'

So here ya go.  Make your votes, keep score.  Oscar night is the best night to stay at home and organize the best drinking games ever.  Which is why we are organizing out own game for you to play.  Gigi is a trip and she will post it Oscar Sunday.

I really only hope that AVATAR doesn't win in the main categories. Other that the visuals/sound, there's not much to the movie.

Rooting for Sandra Bullock, Christophe Waltz, George Clooney (in lieu of Robert Downey Jr, a clear absent here) and also Coraline would be an AWESOME winner, although I think that category is a lock for UP.

I hope George Clooney wins an Oscar. He was fabulous in Up in The Air, he's politically aware, gives GREAT letter, is smart and obviously has a great sense of humour, including about himself. I know it's not a consideration for the Oscar votes, but damn, the man should get an honorary one just for putting together a telethon in 3 or 4 days that ended up raising $58 million for Haiti.

Oh God I agree with hoping Avatar doesn't win the big ones. First, I think JC is a total douche (which of course has nothing to do with his talent as a director) and the movie was SOOOOO unbelievably predictable. Sat with my hubs the whole thing thru saying, ok next this is gonna happen - and it did, every time. Maybe he just thinks the audience is full of idiots. I don't know. Nothing complex about it except the CGI. So...win for that if there is a category nom, but nothing else IMHO.
